Why it matters here

Waterproofing inspections on Cobbitty builds

Upstairs ensuites and tiled balconies are standard in new Cobbitty homes, and both sit over rooms you live in. When a membrane fails up there, the first sign is a stain on the ceiling below. On one Cobbitty job our inspector found a timber window reveal fitted inside the shower zone, which had to come out. Pinholes, a raised puddle flange and a balcony membrane that stops short of the overflow are the other items we see in the area.

FAQ

Waterproofing inspections in Cobbitty: common questions

Why check waterproofing before tiling?

Once tiles are down the membrane cannot be seen. A fault found now is a touch up; found later it means removing tiles.

Do you check balconies as well as bathrooms?

Yes. Balconies over living areas get the same attention, including the overflow and falls.

Which standard applies?

AS 3740 for domestic wet areas, with the National Construction Code and the manufacturer's instructions for the membrane used.

How long is the visit?

Around an hour for a typical house with two or three wet areas.

What is a puddle flange?

The fitting at the floor waste that the membrane laps into. If it sits too high, water ponds around it instead of draining.

Can you test the membrane with water?

We inspect visually. Flood testing, where required, is arranged by the builder or waterproofer.
